This major new online work is a summoning and a worshipping of ancestors – a journey through fire, pain, ash and becoming. M’ap Boulé – Home is where I lay is a play with songs telling the story of a child of immigrant parents growing up in Australia finding her identity. It explores the story of the first black-led republic of Haiti and the personal narrative of a Haitian-Australian woman living on Gadigal land in Waterloo.
‘M’ap Boulé’ translated to English means ‘I’m on fire’ in Haitian Creole, a language that was developed during the Haitian Revolution in 1804.
Written by Nancy Denis and directed by Hilton Denis, M’ap Boulé features original music composed by Carl St Jacques with lyrics by Nancy Denis.
Nancy Denis is a Haitian-Australian actor who, at the age of three, began dance training and has since gone on to secure roles on stage and screen. Recently she was a featured performer in Utp’s RIGHT HERE. RIGHT NOW. (2018) and Home Country (2017).
